An Enduring Legacy: Gary Carle and Wausau Festival of Arts
If you’ve seen any promotional material for the Wausau Festival of Arts (WFoA) over the years, you’ve likely experienced the work of Gary Carle. Gary has been a driving force and an integral part of the festival’s success for decades, and we are thrilled that he continues to lend his artistic vision to our annual themes.
Gary’s long-standing partnership with the WFoA began when the event made its pivotal move from the UW Extension to the downtown area. As he recalls, “I was asked if I wanted to do the poster for it. I was excited to do that.”
That enthusiasm launched a fruitful collaboration. Gary designed the official festival posters for many years and also generously served as a dedicated member of the board.
Gary’s own artistic journey began early, finding his true passion in a junior high art class. This passion led him to Milwaukee Area Technical College to study Graphic Design.
His professional path showcases a breadth of experience: He started at Eisenberg Studios in downtown Milwaukee, served as the Art Director at Channel 9, and later led the art and communications department at Wausau Insurance, eventually rising to Art Director.
In 2000, Gary launched his own venture, Carle Studios LLC, where he focuses on commissioned portraits, notecards, and prints.
Gary's talent is clear in his body of work. Over the years, he has mastered and utilized a wide range of mediums, including oils, acrylics, graphite, colored pencils, opaque watercolors, and computer art.
This year, you can enjoy his delightful artistry once again: be sure to look for his cheetah piece, which graces our advertisements and promotional materials for the festival! See you September 12-13, 2026.
